High Ground Communities
High Ground Communities:Encouraging cities to get totally off fossil fuels now, using wind, solar, geothermal, hydrogen from wind/solar, and energy efficiency. Global oil supplies are dwindling, coal is too carbon dioxide producing, oil shale too expensive and too environmentally hostile. Time to get off fossil fuels. Let's use our brains and work with the planet. Here in Missoula, Mt., the University of Montana has plans to be off fossil fuels by 2020 and has built a hydrogen gas station. Missoula's main waste treatment center, Allied Waste, is changing their methane into electricity. This work has been planned for a number of years. Such change takes time. Cities should begin now and work towards 2020 as a goal for self-sufficiency. HGC has called on the US Department of Energy to fund 60 cities to go off fossil fuels by 2020, a reasonable goal considering the urgency of the situation. The Word links above provide you with both an Executive Summary of this 60 cities approach, and the report written for cities to review.(*below docs and pwrpt summarize. Keep in mind fiscal estimates are too high by a wide margin. Need better fiscal estimates.)
